The impurities in the aluminium affect the anodizing quality tremendously.
Low grade Casting aluminium will need special care in anodizing.
The higher the aluminium purity the shining and effects on it are better.
HOW TO DO NORMAL ANODIZING
STEPS TO BE DONE PRIOR TO ANODIZING
Prepare the Aluminium.
A.Clean the dirty Raw Material with a pre-cleaner.
B.Buff the material to make it smooth and shining.
C.Clean the buffing compounds.
D.Dip the aluminium in a caustic solution for 15 seconds(Just to break the bauxite film and to expose the pure aluminium to the surface).
E. Rinse with water.
DECIDE THE FINISH TO BE GIVEN
STEPS TO BE DONE PRIOR TO ANODIZING
A.Glossy = Bright
B.Matt = Dull or Bright
C.Satin = Dull or Bright
D.Velvet = Dull or Bright
Rinsing in water is required.
Anodizing
Prepare the anodizing bath
De-mineralized water is recommended
90% of problems are related to water impurities.
Sulphuric acid is most commonly used but other electrolytes are also possible.
Normal anodizing temp is done at
18 to 20 degrees centigrade
Can be done at lower temp.also depending on the hardness required.
Fume suppressors are beneficial for use.
Air ventilation is not sufficient alone.
Duration of anodizing
Half time : 20-30 minute for light shades (Gold,Yellows,Light Green,Light Blue)
Full time : 45-50 minutes for dark deep (Rubines,Browns,Navy Blue, Black)
Direct current rectifier used
Current Density
15 amp /sq.meter
Potential Difference : 10-20 Volts D.C.
Different methods are used to get different finishes
The anodizing tank needs to renewed after 3 months as the impurities increase.
Pointers to remember
Check the pH required of the anodizing and colouring bath
Check the quality of the water used.
Keep a check of the aluminum contacts used.
There should be NO oxide or anodizing or colour left on the contacts as it will not pass current.
Check the anodic film with a non destructive meter.
The anodic film should at least have 7 microns for light and 20 for deep dark shades.
